Chapter 3, Page 2: Derecho: A Thousand Mile Super Storm
May 15th 1998
This huge storm roared through Iowa and Minnesota in two waves at up to 70 MPH on May 15, 1998. Behind it lay hundreds
miles of damage caused by straightline winds and short lived tornadoes. This storm called a Derecho, is a rare storm
notorious for this sort of damage.
Shown here is the second wave that hit Scott, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, and Anoka Counties from about 4:00
until 5:30 pm. The first wave shown here over Brainerd did significant damage and killed one at an open air
flea market near St. Cloud. The public reported that this was tornado damage.
Straight line winds were measured at 99 MPH in Northern Ramsey County.
