Radar Tutorial
Chapter 1, Page 2: Bow Echo
The Bow Echo is a radar signature of one of the most dramatic and dangerous land-based storms. Very strong winds of
up to 150 mph can damage hundreds of square miles. These storms move very quickly across a large geographic area.
Some have been known to travel at 80 mph.
These storms often announce their approach with a shelf cloud. The shelf cloud may appear layered or with smooth
layered bands across the face and are quite dramatic in appearance. The strongest winds may be at the leading edge in
what is called the gust front.
Spotters should be very safety conscious with the approach of this kind of storm. There maybe no safer place to be than
in the basement of your own home. The greatest risk in the open is flying debris. A car is no place to be when the gust
front arrives.
