Packet Cluster in Linking Spotters - Wisconsin

I am the guy in Wisconsin who is assembling the hardware and hard work to put together the largest Emergency Packet Network in the state in support of NWS activities (Communications).

I started last year assembling hardware to build a network based on TheNet X1J format. I am now installing PacketCluster Software at each NWS offices across the state. My main aim at this time is getting a workable manual for Pavillion Software so PacketCluster can be understood a bit better to tailor it to work with some sort of importance in the system. I have the help of a retired DX PacketCluster Sysop near EauClaire, WI. Recently his mother has taken ill and requires him to be at bedside. My project is somewhat at a standstill at the moment. I did get my friend to send me the disks and do have it installed on the hard drive at the Wisconsin Div. of Emergency Government (Ham Shack). If you know of someone who could lend a hand getting the G8BPQ to operate with PacketCluster and a KPC-9612, it would be most helpful!

I am assembling an identical system at the NWS office at Sullivan, WI and want to do the same for Green Bay NWS, LaCrosse, WI, and Wausau, WI. The Nodes are all installed except for 4 units that we don't have radios for yet. I would like to have the system up and ready for the upcoming storm season. Last year we used the X1J Nodes to communicate between Div. of Emergency Government and Sullivan and it worked beautifully. It is just time now to be able to archive all the info for retrieval later on and pass Packet mail between EC's.

Early last year I spearheaded the move from the state Packet coordinator to declare 145.61mhz. as a state-wide Packet Emergency frequency. It was not easy to do. But finally after all the votes were counted we got the frequency set aside for ARES/RACES and Emergency Only.

Our goal now is to get this system operating with PacketCluster Software and the rest is just filling in the holes. My Nodes now cover the bottom 1/2 of the state completely. A total of 22 nodes to date all done within the last year by one hardworking guy, me! I'm not burnt out yet, because I enjoy the challenge. I have had some disappointments along the way, but nothing I couldn't solve. It is to the point now where I need some expertise from others to push the big rock over the cliff.

Thanks in advance for any help you can rustle up. I will pass along your questioner to our SkyWarn Chief.

Best Regards, Len Kreyer, N9QIP
