Packet and AFOS
Just to let those know I am running a JNOS110L compiled as a 486 version under BC 4.5. What I am doing here in
Indianapolis is a little unique. I am the statewide amateur radio SKYWARN Coordinator for the Indianapolis office of
the National Weather Service (volunteer only). About four years ago I approached the NWS with the idea of connecting
a packet radio station to their AFOS nationwide computer system. With some custom ingestion software, we dump selected
AFOS products such as Tornado watches, warnings, NEXRAD radar coded message information and other weather related
products. These products dump into W0RLI ver 18.1 and BPQ. I have two ports in operation there. One on 2m and a 9600
backbone on 440. This system is forwarding to me approx. 400-500 bulletins a day. My goal is to create a statewide
emergency packet radio network solely for the purpose of disseminating weather and other disaster related information.
Thus giving the SKYWARN spotter with a laptop the ability to view radar and satellite images in their vehicle.
