APRS and Weather Alert
There exists these small stamp sized "computers" They are great for applications involving analog to digital conversions
and have rs232 compatible ports, programmable in "basic" and are inexpensive. KC4NMY and myself are developing a small stamp
that hooks up to a cheap wx radio. For those in area's that don't have APRS wx stations, or for possible Skywarn
applications (without the peet wx station, which doesn't know if a tornado is inbound until its on top of it) this
chip will monitor the alert tone on a wx radio.
When the Radio shack wx beep goes off, indicating a wx emergency, the chip hears this and programs the tnc with a
previously decided text. This text can be set up in APRS format to set off your wx alarms on your computer, or be
set up with another tnc/chip that can read the alert, and dial up a beeper list if needed. Your APRS program will
alert you to a problem, and if your in the car or outside, your beeper could alert you. REMIND you that it is a
generic alert, and tells you that bad wx is coming, not the nature of the wx emergency but at least it is another
way to remind you to investigate the wx situation. The cost of an entire kit could be less than $100.
I (we) need feedback about how to change this basic premise of operation to better suit needs. What would your specific
need be? What modification to this basic idea would you suggest?
Thanks in advance.
